Andy Mead

Board Member

Andy Mead was born in Savannah but did most of his growing up in northeast Florida. He earned a master’s degree in history, then found his perfect career when he got a job as a copy boy at The Boca Raton (FL) News.  He arrived in Lexington in 1976 to write for the

Lexington Herald-Leader, where he focused on environmental issues, including trees and tree health. He retired in 2010.

Although eschewing participation in civic groups while a journalist, he has since served on the Lexington History Museum Board, the Arboretum Advisory Board and now the board of Trees Lexington! He is president of the Southern Heights Neighborhood Association Board and a member of the Wolf Run Watershed Council.

Andy lives with his partner, Lexington native Pace Cooke Emmons, who is a Mental Health First Aid National Trainer.  He is the father of twins Ben and Julia Mead and stepfather of Robin Emmons. His hobbies include gardening (where pollinator-friendly plants have mostly replaced vegetables) and watching British mysteries on the telly. He loves the Kentucky Theatre.
