POCKET NURSERY

TREE GIVEAWAY

We have trees that need homes!

For the past 5 months, 100 Pocket Nursery participants have been tending to 600 baby trees made up of 12 different native tree species. These trees will be ready for harvest this fall, and we need help finding their new homes!

While our Pocket Nursery parents will also be working to find homes for trees among friends & neighbors, a number of trees will be donated back to Trees Lexington & placed in new homes throughout the community. That's where you come in!

If you think you have a space on your property that would support one (or more) of these shade trees, please fill out the application below to be considered as one of our Pocket Nursery Tree-Cipients.

PLEASE NOTE: Trees are in limited supply, and we are in still in the process of collecting data related to number and species availability of surviving Pocket Nursery trees available to the public. Therefore, submitting a form does not guarantee that you will receive a tree this go around.

Things to note:

  • If getting a tree from Trees Lexington, trees can be picked up at one of our designated locations throughout November (TBD).

  • The tree stock is still young, with most trees between 2-3 feet tall and less than an inch in caliper (trunk circumference).  That said, the mulch medium they have been growing in has encouraged healthy root growth, which will have long-term benefits for the trees as they grow.

  • Despite their current small size, most all of the available species (with the exception of the hazelnut) are medium to large shade trees when fully grown.  For this reason, we recommend a nice open place in your yard that gets a good amount of sun.

  •  Trees need (and deserve) both love of care, especially in the first few years of their establishment. Receiving one of these tree babies means you will be responsible for keeping it watered (about 1 inch per week), mulched, and fertilized (if needed). We are available to help with questions related to tree care as they grow!

  • Due to the mature size of the species available and limitations presented by permitting through the City of Lexington, we strongly advise that Pocket Nursery trees not be planted in the verge (aka utility strip, easement).

  • Trees must be planted in Lexington, Kentucky.

We recommend most of these trees for open lawns (front or back).

These trees should not go in the verge or anywhere under power lines.
