100 PEOPLE

600+ TREES

AND WE'D LIKE TO

PLANT THOUSANDS MORE

Lexington is in need of quality tree canopy growth. Even more, our community needs a way to unleash its full potential for environmental stewardship. The Pocket Nursery, developed by Trees Lexington!, offers an interactive program that is remarkably simple for all users.  It’s key purpose is to educate and inspire, thus empowering residents to see their power and ability to influence the tree growing process and the quality of our urban environment.

The Pocket Nursery is a program designed by arborists and approved by local homeowners. Intentionally simple by design, it puts the power (and fun!) of growing trees into the hands of homeowners while also providing them with reliable, high-quality education from local tree care professionals, every step of the way.  The Pocket Nursery will not only grow a sense of community empowerment among Lexingtonians, it will also grow healthy, usable tree stock for both private and public planting projects in our city.

Even if they don’t yet know it, most people like to get their hands in the dirt!  For many, interacting directly with nature is incredibly therapeutic and instills a sense of purpose. When we prioritize the planting of large trees, such as balled and burlapped, we may exclude people who may not have the means or ability to manage the responsibility of planting and rearing a tree that size from the outset.  Limiting factors such as planting space, finances, and physical ability can keep an individual or family from seeing possibility in planting trees on their property.  The Pocket Nursery overcomes these limitations in both form and function. Additionally, bare root trees do BETTER and have healthier root systems which equals stronger, more magnificent trees after years of love and growth.

What are kids into these days? Planting trees!  For this reason, Trees Lexington! is partnering with Fayette County Public Schools to help us take the goals of environmental education even further. Additionally, The Pocket Nursery program will give students an experience that drives personal growth and promotes values of stewardship as they find their pathway in life. All this is done in tandem with increasing Lexington’s tree canopy.

We are also working with other environmental organizations and local businesses who share our belief in the power of trees.  Trees Lexington! and our partners stand by the idea that, by establishing healthy urban ecosystems, our community will see numerous benefits.  Just to name a few -  carbon storage (for the climate!), stormwater interception, lower crime rates,  improved mental health, a greater sense of community, AND, the most popular one of all - SHADE!

The Pocket Nursery pilot program will take off in Lexington in spring of 2019, with many thanks to small donations from members of the community who believe strongly in our mission to reforest Lexington, one pocket nursery at a time.
